What Drives the Price of Used Switchgear
Six variables account for nearly all of the difference between a strong offer and a scrap price.

Amperage and voltage class set the ceiling
Everything else is an adjustment on top of these two. A 4000A 480V drawout lineup and a 225A panelboard are not the same kind of transaction, and no amount of good condition moves the small one into the large one's range.
The practical break points are roughly these: up to 800A the gear is best sold in lots; 1200A to 2000A carries solid individual value; 3000A and above is worth freighting across the country for; and medium voltage at any rating is priced against new-build lead times that now run well over a year.
Copper versus aluminum bus
This is frequently the largest single adjustment. Copper bus is worth more as metal and it is also what a large share of the resale market specifies, so a copper-bus lineup has both a higher floor and a larger buyer pool than an otherwise identical aluminum one.
If you do not know which you have, that is fine. It is usually determinable from the type designation and vintage, and we confirm it at inspection.

Breaker type and whether they are still installed
Drawout air and vacuum breakers are the most valuable, because they are field-replaceable, they carry an active spares market, and a facility with a failed breaker will pay well for a matching used one. Fixed-mount molded case breakers are worth less individually but still resell readily in common frame sizes.
Whether the breakers are still racked in their own cubicles matters as much as the type. A complete lineup is an asset somebody can install. A lineup plus a pile of unmatched breakers is a project, and it prices accordingly.
Manufacturer and the spares market
Brand is not about prestige here, it is about how many installations exist that might need your gear as spares. Square D, GE, Eaton, Cutler-Hammer, Siemens, ABB and Westinghouse all have large installed bases, which means steady demand for sections and breakers.
Less common manufacturers are still bought. The pool of buyers is smaller, so the number is usually more conservative, but there is no brand we decline outright.
Condition, and what actually counts as damage
The condition that matters is inside the gear. Water that reached the bus, arc damage in a cubicle, rodent damage to control wiring and a stripped relay panel all reduce value materially. Dented doors, missing covers, surface rust and faded paint barely register.
Outdoor service history is its own factor. A NEMA 3R lineup that sat in a coastal environment for twenty years is priced differently from the same gear that lived in a dry indoor room, regardless of how it looks from ten feet away.
Quantity, access and timing
A full electrical room bought as one lot is worth more per section than the same sections sold piecemeal, because our mobilisation and freight are spread across more equipment. That is why we quote whole rooms and whole plants as a single number.
Access cuts the other way. Gear in a basement vault reached only by a freight elevator costs more to extract than gear sitting at a dock door, and that cost is real whether the buyer states it or absorbs it. Being straightforward about access at quoting time is what keeps an offer from being re-traded later.

Straight answers
Can you give me a price per pound?
Only for scrap-grade gear, and we would rather not, because pricing serviceable switchgear by weight is exactly what costs sellers money. Resale-grade lineups are priced against what the next owner will pay.
Does a recent test report increase the offer?
Often yes, because it shortens the next owner's commissioning work. It is never required, though.
Why do two identical-looking lineups get different offers?
Usually bus material, breaker type, whether the breakers are still installed, or interior condition that is not visible from the front.
